Helpful Self Storage Tips
Some helpful storage tips when it is time to move your belongings into Community
Self Storage:
Take Extra Care When Packing
- Prepare unit by placing plastic on the floor, beneath your goods.
- Label each box with numbers. Jot down its contents on a master list, to take home.
- Fill containers to capacity, or fill extra pockets of space with packing material.
- Pack heavy items (books, etc.) in small boxes. Cushion with wadded packing paper.
- Limit the weight of each box to 30 lbs. or less.
- Leave space to reach the back of unit.
- Put frequently used items near the front of the unit.
- Leave a small space between the goods stored, and the storage unit’s walls.
- Do not stack heavy or folded objects where they could shift or collapse.
- Never store anything in sealed plastic bags, especially in non-A/C storage units.
Dining and Living Rooms
- Wax wood furniture before storing it. Use sheets or cotton cloth to cover furniture.
- Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard and marked “Fragile”.
Stand straight up.
- Wrap large lamp bases in padding, and pad smaller lamps. Store in boxes.
- Pack delicate lamp shades separately.
- Pack mirrors, windows, and record albums on edge.
- Pack books flat. Put boxes with books or papers on skids to prevent moisture absorption.
- Disassemble electronics, such as computers and stereos. Place small colored
stickers on
each cable, and the same color sticker where the cable goes. If possible,
use original packing.
- When wrapping collectibles, tape after wrapping so they won't be mistaken for wadded paper.
Kitchen and Bathrooms
- Appliances should be clean and dry.
- Fill interiors of appliances with linens, clothes and stuffed toys.
- Stuff towels between the washing machine and the inner tub to keep tub from rotating.
- Leave refrigerator and freezer doors ajar.
- Some goods can be stored in appliances, or stacked on top of them.
- Individually wrap dishes and glassware. Have layer of padding on box top and bottom.
- Nest bowls and cups, and stand plates on end. Fill all pockets with padding.
- Store light chairs inverted, seat-to-seat.
- Remove and discard vacuum cleaner bags.
Bedrooms
- Keep out-of-season clothing accessible. They may be in storage longer than
anticipated.
- If storing wool items, use cedar ships or mothballs to prevent moth damage.
- Clothing, curtains and drapes should be cleaned and stored on hangers.
- Clothing that ordinarily hangs in a closet should be packed in a wardrobe carton.
- Stand mattresses on long end, wrap for protection, and elevate off of the floor.
- Disassemble beds and tables. Place upside down on the floor.
- Stack boxes on dressers, and use drawers to store delicate items.
- Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard and marked “Fragile”.
Stand straight up.
- Fill dresser drawers with fragile items, and use blankets, sweaters and towels for padding.
Attic and Garage
- To avoid rust, metal objects (tools, bikes, etc.) should be wiped with a rag
containing machine oil.
- Save and use original holiday decoration cartons.
- Wrap Christmas lights around a piece of cardboard. Put packing paper around it.
Store in box.
